Barely 10 days after a mob killed an Igbo woman for alleged blasphemy in Kano, a 41- year old carpenter, Francis Emmanuel, was on Tuesday afternoon stabbed by Islamic extremists in Kaduna State for eating during
Ramadan fasting, reports The Nation.
The incident occurred at 2:30pm on Tuesday when Emmanuel was eating in his workshop. The extremists, who were mainly youths suddenly appeared from nowhere and started attacking him for eating on the afternoon of Ramadan. Speaking on his hospital bed, Emmanuel said the youths numbering six, had asked him why he was not fasting.
He said he responded by telling them that he was not a Muslim but before he knew what was happening, they attacked him with knives, cutlasses and scissors He said nobody could come to his aid because of the type of knives the fundamentalists were carrying. After beating him to stupor, the youths abandoned Emmanuel and fled the scene of the incident.
Onlookers later came to his rescue and took him to hospital. On hearing of the incident, Gov Nasir el-Rufai on Wednesday morning visited the victim of the assault at St. Gerard Catholic Hospital, He directed the police to fish out perpetrators for prosecution.
