Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai, the chief of army staff, has revealed those who are standing behind the rumours to overthrow the government of Muhammadu Buhari.
While Buratai didn’t give concrete names, he has blamed some officers and political class of being responsible for this.
COAS further cautioned against any army misadventure, saying probes were ongoing to unmask those behind the speculation.
He said: “ We are much better under democracy. Military misadventure in democracy should not repeat itself.
“We see it as an attempt to show some misgivings by some officers and the political class, but they will fail.” Meanwhile, Buratai restated the fact that the military will remain apolitical and professional, as it sustains its operation to free the schoolgirls and other captives.
The Joint Niger Delta Liberation Force had last week alleged of a sinister plan by some unnamed army officers to topple the democratically-elected government of Buhari.
The army responding to accusation claimed that the story was fabricated to achieve cheap publicity and also meant to heat up the polity and cause public apprehension.
However, later top military commanders were convoked for emergency meeting over the rumours.
