Pastor kumuyi @75

There  was an air of excitement some days ago when  many within and outside the Deeper Life Bible Church,  seized various platforms, especially the social media to bestow encomium on the General Superintendent Pastor William Folorunsho Kumuyi,  who clocked 75 years last Monday.

Described as an exemplary preacher, Pastor Kumuyi’s humble and simple lifestyle has continued to endear him to many people, even those outside the Christian fold.

As a gospel minister whose teaching centers on true Christian living and holiness, he is believed to be unwavering despite the level of compromise that some church leaders have plunged themselves into in most recent time.

 

Background

For those who may not know, Pastor Kumuyi was born in 1941 into an Anglican family in Erin-Ijesha, Osun State.  He had his secondary school education in 1961, and started teaching Mathematics in1962 at Mayflower School in Ikenne, Ogun-State. From here he proceeded to the University of Ibadan and graduated in 1967 with a First-Class Honours degree in Mathematics and returned to Mayflower School to teach.

In 1972, he went to the University of Lagos to do a Postgraduate Certificate in Education and became a lecturer there in 1973 and started a small Deeper Life Bible Study group with 15 persons inside the University’s campus in Akoka.

Meanwhile during his secondary school days, the GS, as referred to by members of the church, said he lost interest in the church because the principal taught them atheism. But after a while, he had a rethink and started going to various churches in town. Eventually, in 1963, a group of singers and preachers from a gospel church got permission to come to the school where he was teaching. Then he understood the gospel message and was born again on April 5, 1964. Therefater, he got involved with the Scripture Union (SU).

 

Marriage

On September 13, 1980 in Lagos, the GS signed the dotted lines with one of his Bible class students, the late ‘Mummy Abiodun’. The marriage was blessed with two sons, Jeremiah and John, both of whom were said to have been dotted upon by their beloved mother who passed into eternity at the age of 57 on April 11, 2009.

The marriage between them, according to the church expectedly thrusted upon her the role of a helper to her Pastor- husband.

“Naturally, she threw herself into the Women Ministry of the church. Through that ministry, multitudes of women were saved from their sins and obtained other Christian experiences of sanctification and Holy Ghost baptism. Many became missionaries and preachers in their own right. The women ministry under her leadership saw the restoration of peace, joy and love to many homes, and reconciliation in many broken marriages and lives.

“An energetic, dynamic and visionary woman, ‘Mama’, spear-headed the establishment of the Christian Women Mirror Magazine, which she used  to teach women all they needed to know to be successful wives and mothers, accomplished and exemplary christians and models of excellence. The magazine, for which she was editor-in-chief until her demise, has become so popular that it is circulating far and wide and is highly sought after by readers who are no longer restricted to women.”

Reportedly, about 18 months after the death of his wife, the GS remarried Esther Blaize around October 2010 in London. Mrs. Esther Kumuyi is said to be one of the 15 founding members of the church in 1973. Before she walked down the aisle with the salvation-preaching man of God in a low-key ceremony in London, she was the church’s secretary in charge of the London branch.

She is highly regarded among members of the church as a virtuous woman who has relentlessly served God and the church. Before she got married at 65, Esther had never been married and had dedicated her life to the service of God.

Observers feel that her presence in the life of the GS has ushered him into another level in the ministry, as he seems not to be dwindling in appearance nor in the zeal for the work of God.

 

Ministerial Works In Recent Years

With the various transformations the church is witnessing from the pronouncement of the GS’ visit to other churches to preach, to the ongoing eye popping ultra modern church auditorium in Gbagada, to its social responsibility projects and its presence in the cyber space, some analysts believe that the ministry and the GS are in for better days.

In all, this is to wish the GS, more fruitful, healthier and happier years!
