UNIBEN Students Denied Graduation

Temidayo Awoyemi, a student at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has been denied graduation for three years because the lecturers claim they were too busy to process his file.

According to Premium Times, Temidayo who is a student at the department of chemistry was told in his final year that his West African Senior Secondary School Certificate was not in its records This was not a problem peculiar to him alone as five other students were also told the same.

He reportedly submitted the certificate during the 2012/2013 session but till 2016, the chemistry department has still not cleared his result for graduation.

The process of clearing him requires the approval of his course adviser, Wayne Omagamre, faculty checker, Professor Anthony Imiavan; the Head of Department, Professor James Okuo; and Dean, Professor Sunday Omosigho. Temidayo said each time he approached the school, he was told the officials in charge were too busy to attend to his case.

“Even after the course adviser claimed that he had done his own aspects of the work, the faculty checker, Prof. Imiavan, especially, has refused to check my results for years now for whatever reasons I don’t know.” “From my understanding, the department has no problem with my result. I don’t have any criminal record. But I don’t know why the officials have refused to process my result.”

Michael Osasuyi who is the spokesperson of UNIBEN said the case was unusual and had received the attention of the vice chancellor.

“The various authorities that are concerned with this matter are now working on it. Once the vice chancellor gets a report on it, you will be able to get a feedback.”

Mr. Okuo who is the HOD was reportedly angry when contacted about the case while the faculty checker, Prof Imiavan admitted the student had no case, but that “an individual does not approve a result alone”.
