The world’s largest chain of hamburger fast food restaurants McDonald’s has created a real life Monopoly-themed little red hotel in Melbourne, Australia.
McDonald’s held a contest to choose two superfans who would get to sleep inside the mini-hotel, and the lucky winners were two women named Laura Paton and Emma Kendrick, who are close friends and live in the suburb of Belgrave.
The splashy event was a promotion for the popular Monopoly at McDonald’s game—where people peel Monopoly squares off of their fries and sodas, hoping to collect a full set and win cash—which has just returned to Australia. There is also a new app version of the game where customers can scan their cards on their smartphones.
Not only did Kendrick and Paton get to hang out in the pop-up hotel, they got to meet Mr. Monopoly himself, who acted as their concierge for the night. The real-life game piece measured 2.4 meters by 3 meters and had a custom Federation Square property marker in front of it.
Inside, the bright red theme continued, with one notable exception: a gleaming white top hat hanging from a hook on the wall.
Missing from the scene were the iron, the race car, the Scottie dog, and the shoe.
