Nigeria’s Super Eagles began their 2018 World Cup Qualification bid in emphatic fashion, beating the Chipolopolo of Zambia away from home 2-1.
The match was very much a tale of two halves with the Super Eagles asserting the first half.Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi continued his impressive start to life in the Super Eagles when he opened the scoring. He capitalised on a failure by the Zambian central defender to properly clear from a throwing to score a half volley.
The Super Eagles consolidated their lead thanks to Kelechi Iheneacho who received a sublime pass from Iwobi before rounding the Zambian keeper and beating two defenders.
The Eagles went in 2-0 at half time and the game seemed as good as over. The Zambians came out all gun blazing in the second half and the Eagles looked shaky in defense as Omeruo looked bereft of confidence. Nigeria’s fullbacks were constantly drawn out of position by Zambia and the Chipolopolo pulled one back in the 71st minute through Mbesuma.
Hard as the Zambians tried to get an equalizer, the Super Eagles stood firm to claim three precious away points.
