2016 saw a lot of Nigerian artistes put out their albums especially towards the last quarter of the year, it also saw the likes of CDQ, Reekado Banks, Adekunle Gold, Lil Kesh and Kiss Daniel put out their debut albums.
We have earmarked a few artistes that are likely to release their debut albums in 2017 and we are hugely anticipating the releases.
Tekno
Triple MG superstar Tekno totally owned 2016 with back to back smash hit singles the biggest of them all being “Pana”. “Pana” sat conveniently on top of most charts across the country for several weeks making it arguably the biggest song of the year.
The anticipation for a Tekno body of work/album is heightened, the singer should put out his debut album in 2017.
Mr Eazi
If there is an award for revelation of the year it will surely go to Mr Eazi. Ever since he burst on to the Nigerian scene earlier in the year, he hasn’t looked back. Although he’s been popping in Ghana and diaspora for a while, he officially made an entrance into the Nigerian music scene in 2016.
Mr Eazi undoubtedly the most featured artist in Nigeria in 2016, he has a guest appearance on virtually all the albums that was released in 2016. 2017 can only get bigger for the Star Boy-signed singer. We look forward to the release of his debut album in 2017 tentatively titled “Life Is Eazi”
Cynthia Morgan
Reggaeton/Dancehall act, Cynthia Morgan has been on the impressive for a while now. She’s been putting out decent singles for at least the past 24months since she officially inked a deal with Jude Okoye’s Northside Inc.
She has grown significantly as an artiste over the years and she’s definitely due for a debut album, we hope it comes in 2017.
Ayo Jay
“Your Number” is arguably the most successful afrobeats single in America till date, burning up airwaves with the help of Fetty Wap. It also boasts a remix with Chris Brown and Kid Ink. 2016 has seen Ayo Jay perform at mainstream concerts in the States, sign a deal with RCA Records and he has also garnered more fans while at it.
We hope Ayo Jay rides on this current wave and drop his debut album in 2017.
Humblesmith
Humblesmith has been consistent with the releases since he made a breakthrough with his smash single –Osinachi. He has since released a slew of singles featuring heavyweights like Davido & Flavour.
His current single “Change” is currently enjoying decent airplay across the nation. 2017 should see the singer unload his debut offering.
Niniola
Afro-house act Niniola has seen her stock rise in 2016 with the release of her buzz single “Shaba”. “Shaba” has seen Niniola garner some traction and gain more fans in the process in 2016.
One of her limitations so far has been the lack of consistent releases. The project fame alumna should put out a body of work in 2017 to fully showcase her capabilities.
Korede Bello
Mavin Records singer, Korede Bello owes #Bellovers an album and it should come in 2017. Korede Bello has seen his fanbase grow with each release his made under the Mavin imprint.
Korede Bello is big enough to do decent numbers if he decides to drop his album today because of his ever growing fanbase. We expect the good people at Mavin records put out the well-anticipated debut in 2017.
Ycee
Ycee had a decent outing in 2016, he got himself a Sony deal. Dubbed the leader of new school rap in some quarters, the rapper has been on a spaceship since he scored a smash hit with “Jagaban”.
He promised to put out a mixtape in 2016 but he hasn’t done that yet. We await a body of work from the rapper in 2017.
Sugarboy
G-worldwide Entertainment singer, Sugarboy is no newbie in the music industry, he has been around for a while but he finally made his mark on the industry with his fan favourite tune – “Hola Hola”.
“Hola Hola” has helped Sugarboy amass a fanbase over the past few months, and he has gained more traction with each of his follow-up releases. Considering his label mate Kiss Daniel has released his debut album, Sugarboy should be the next in line to make a drop.
Zoro
Igbo-spitting rapper, Zoro has been grinding for a while but he finally made his mark on the industry in 2016 with singles like “Ogene” featuring Highlife maestro Flavour. He followed “Ogene” up with another buzz single“Achikolo” featuring heavyweight rapper Phyno.
Zoro has gained more popularity with each release this year, we are looking forward to a body of work from the rapper in 2017.
