The PERWAKILAN (Malaysian Ladies Association in Abuja) in conjunction with the Malaysian High Commission has paid a charity visit to the Alpha & Omega orphanage in Maraba, Nasarawa State. This show of love and care is in line with Malaysia’s Vision 2020, there are 9 pillars targeted at achieving a developed nation, and one of them is aimed at establishing a caring society.
The orphanage which is presently has 6 volunteers, cares for orphans and the less privileged children regardless of which religion they belong to. The children welcomed the entourage from the Malaysian community and friends with songs, display of cultural dance and a match parade among others.
The Malaysian High Commissioner, Lim Juay Jin, after the presentation emotively expressed, “First of all I would like to express my sincere appreciation. You are all my beloved and dear children. Our visit today is part of an initiative spearheaded by PERWAKILAN. Funds were raised during a session of teaching Malaysian cuisine. It is money spent today as part of our efforts to assist and return to society,” he said. Adding that the children will in the future do Nigeria proud. “This is a very humbling experience and we are deeply touched by all of you.” He said. The President of PERWAKILAN, and spouse of the Malaysian High Commissioner Datin Lin Yi, who was present equally addressed the children, “ Today, I has a touching experience. Its our first charity outing and in the future we will have more and more and we will come back.” Adding that she hoped to work with the orphanage to improve living conditions of the children.
The Founder and Visioner of the orphanage, Dr Mrs, Ariyo Olawunmi Elizabeth, expressed her appreciation for the contributions of PERWAKILAN, and the High Commissioner who is Patron.
“The purpose is basically education driven. You change a life, you change a destiny. And my achievement so far is that I am happy seeing children who were picking stones some years back, now some of them are in JSS3/SS1. To God be the glory.” Previously the children could not read or write. Asked how she got funding, and if the federal government was aware, Dr Ariyo states that friends have been helping, as well as she and her husband. “We have written a letter to Nasarawa State, our application is there. Maybe they will look into it someday,” she said.
