Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has said that the biting economic situation in the country may have been responsible for the nonpayment of Super Falcons’ allowances. It will be recalled that Falcons who were victorious in the just concluded Africa Women Cup of Nations champions by beating Cameroon to win the trophy on Saturday have not been paid.
To this end, they refused to vacate their hotel in Abuja on Tuesday. It was reported however that the players were offered N50,000 each but they rejected it; demanding for all their outstanding allowances. An inquiry into the matter by the State House Correspondents at the end of the meeting of the Federal Executive Council, FEC on Wednesday revealed the Ministry of Youth and Sport was handling the matter. Lai Mohammed when asked whether the matter came up at the meeting said this: “The Minister of Youth and Sports raised the issue today at the council and it is being looked into. “Over time, it has become tradition to reward victorious athletes or sports persons but I think this is caused by the biting economic situation. “The Minister of Youth and Sports is handling the matter. It was reported under other matters today at the council.” Sent from my BlackBerry wireless device from MTN
